Issues

The information below provides a general overview of the policy issues that we have particular expertise in.

These can be inter-linked and form the basis of EU commercial legislation.

Environment Policy

EU Treaty govern environment policy. Since the Amsterdam Treaty signed in 1997, all environment policy is decided by co-decision. We assist clients in understanding and influencing environment policy linked to their industrial activities. Our files include emissions and fuel quality, waste recovery, recycling and shipment, water pollution, climate change and sustainable development.

Energy Policy

The EU's commitment to the Kyoto Protocol on climate change has driven a large discussion on energy policy from a climate change point of view. Energy efficiency initiatives for buildings, installations and products have been numerous. Furthermore focus is on security of supply and safe and efficient energy distribution. We also work on issues related to green energy and energy trading, as well as on the development of alternative sources energy.

Chemicals and Biochemicals Policy

The EU's total review of chemicals policy through its REACH initiative has been a matter of interest to a number of industrial sectors. Our files, however, include other aspects of industrial chemicals policy such as specialty chemicals, plastics and polymers, as well as substances for research use.

Transport Policy

The European Union Member States are committed to the harmonisation of transport policy. Our focus has been on total transportation chains and logistics, although we also cover road transport, aviation and rail as separate sectors. Topics within these areas include competition issues, safety, international agreements and deregulation, as well as infrastructure charging and trans-European networks.

Maritime Policy

In recent years, the EU has taken the global lead in the shaping of international maritime policy. Numerous initiatives related to maritime safety and the protection of the marine environment have been drafted and adopted at EU level, and have been discussed at the IMO. We are active in all topics related to the transport of goods by sea, including trade, social and security aspects, as well as issues related to the shipbuilding sector.

Food Policy

The establishment of the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) has only underlined Europe's commitment to food safety policy. A full review of the implementation of food and feed chain legislation has been an important part of this general trend. We have worked on topics such as the animal by-products Regulation, as well as on issues related to risk and risk assessment in pursuit of food safety policy. In addition, we are well versed in policy related to aquaculture and fisheries policy.
